HLSC 240 - Global Health and Cultural Perspectives Credit(s): 3 3 hours lecture, 3 hours contact This course will explore the influence that cultural beliefs, values, and practices have on perspectives of wellness, illness, healthcare, and community health around the world.
Students will explore the role of social determinants in shaping health disparities both in the United States and other countries. Throughout the course, students will use evidence-based sources, case studies, and other course materials to explore topics such as ethics, healthcare systems, the role of the social and physical environment, water and sanitation, aging, communicable and noncommunicable diseases, and maternal and child health. Emphasis is placed on cultivating the interpersonal skills of empathy, flexibility, and responsiveness to effectively care for and learn from clients of diverse backgrounds.
