ENGL 541 - Search for Identity Amer Lit Credit(s): 3 3 hours lecture, 3 hours contact The course will examine the search for and different manifestations of personal and group identity in American culture and literature. In broadest terms, the course will trace the formation of nineteenth-century liberal ideals of personal identity and “freedom” as they emerged from the theological and republican values of the colonial and early national periods, and as they evolved over the course of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
