New York State requires completion of the following undergraduate Prerequisites for students seeking the TESOL, PreK-12 Certification, which will fulfill part of the General Education requirements:

Mathematical Processes 6 credits                       
Scientific Processes* 6 credits
Historical and Social Sciences*    6 credits 
Information Retrieval 3 credits 
Communications/Humanities/Written Analysis and Expression    3 credits 
Artistic Expression 3 credits 
Language other than English 12 credits 

A course in Child Development is required. PSYN 254 is acceptable. 
*Coursework in Environmental Science, Evolution, Nutrition or Plants and People is not acceptable for teacher certification requirements. 

The TESOL graduate courses that must be completed for the B.A. degree are the following: 

  • EDUC 501- Education in Today’s Schools
  • EDUC 505- Teaching English as a Second Language
  • EDUC 504- Cultural Perspectives and the Teaching Learning Process
  • EDUC 506- Educational Evaluation and Assessment from Early Childhood through Adolescence
  • EDUC 507- Approaches to Literacy in Early Childhood through Adolescence

The above 15 credits are taken as an undergraduate student as part of the B.A. degree program. The remaining 21 credits are taken as a graduate student after receiving the B.A. degree and after meeting the admission requirement for acceptance into the M.S. degree program. Please see the Graduate Catalog for course descriptions of the above courses and for specific requirements for the M.S. degree. 

Graduate Progression Criteria

In Spring of the fourth year, students in the B.A. Spanish / M.S. TESOL, Pre-K-12 program will be evaluated by the School of Education Associate Dean and graduate Program Director for a review of their qualifications to progress to the graduate education portion of the program.  Students who meet the following requirements will be permitted to progress to the graduate education portion of the 4+1 program:

  1. Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and in Graduate Education courses
  2. Submit an Effective Educator Statement.
  3. Submission of an acceptable score on the Verbal Reasoning, Mathematical Reasoning, and Analytic Writing subtests of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the PRAXIS Core Exams in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics.

Students in the 4+1 program who do not meet the above criteria, will not be permitted to continue to the graduate education portion of the program. Their major will be changed to the B.A. Spanish and the undergraduate degree will be conferred upon completion of the undergraduate program. Credits earned for graduate education courses taken will be applied to the undergraduate degree as elective credit.
