NOTE: This program will be available starting in Spring 2025.
The purpose of the Advanced Certificate in Literacy Program is to cultivate professional educators who serve as critical practitioners of literacy. The program provides its teacher candidates with a theoretical and practical foundation in 21st century literacy, addressing research and science-based literacy approaches and strategies, traditional as well as nontraditional forms of literacy, and multicultural perspectives. Teacher candidates will develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to be effective classroom or reading teachers, working with students of diverse backgrounds and of different reading abilities across all grades. The teacher candidates will also develop competencies to work with other teachers, school administrators, and community stakeholders, including parents, to support student learning. By the end of the program, all candidates will be able to:
1. Link theory and practice to create environments conducive to literacy development and learning.
2. Provide appropriate instruction for students having difficulty in acquiring grade appropriate literacy skills including students with disabilities and English language learners.
3. Analyze assessment data for instructional decision-making, and communicate information about literacy to parents, caregivers, and school personnel.
