Students who choose the major concentration in Biology or Biology Education must complete all the required general education, required major, and major elective courses as listed: Biology, Biology Education Track, B.S.  

Master of Science in Adolescence Education, Grades 7–12

The Adolescence Graduate Courses that must be completed for the B.S. degree are the following:

• EDUC 500 - Educational Foundations from Diverse Perspectives
• EDUC 502 - Foundations in Education for Students with Disabilities from Birth through Adolescence
• EDUC 505 - Teaching English as a Second Language
• EDUC 507 - Approaches to Literacy in Early Childhood through Adolescence
• EDUC 517 - Educational Psychology and Adolescent Development

The above 15 credits are taken as an undergraduate student as undergraduate student as part of the B.S. degree program. The remaining 15 credits are taken as a graduate student after receiving the B.S. degree and after meeting the admission requirements for acceptance into the M.S. degree program. To complete the master’s degree in one calendar year, students must take two courses during summer session. Please see Graduate Catalog for course descriptions of the above courses and for specific requirements for the M.S. degree.

*Students in the 4+1 program must take EDUC 205 - Contemporary Issues in Childhood & Education Credits: 3, under the Social Perspectives General Education Disciplinary Grouping, as a general education elective

Graduate Progression Criteria

In the final undergraduate year, students in the B.S. Biology / M.S. Adolescence Education, Grades 7-12 program will be evaluated by the School of Education Associate Dean and graduate Program Director for a review of their qualifications to progress to the graduate education portion of the program, including:

1. Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and in Graduate Education courses
2. Submit a written Effective Educator Statement. 

Students in the 4+1 program who do not meet the above criteria, will not be permitted to continue to the graduate education portion of the program. Their major will be changed to the B.S. Biology and the undergraduate degree will be conferred upon completion of the undergraduate program. Credits earned for graduate education courses taken will be applied to the undergraduate degree as elective credit.
