PSYN 661 - Professional Helping Skills Credit(s): 3 3 hours lecture, 3 hours contact Prerequisite(s): PSYN 654 and/or Graduate-level Abnormal Psychology A foundation course introducing the student to the theory and practice of professional helping, as it is implemented in different settings, including counseling and psychotherapy, human services agencies, educational and workplace settings. Students will be introduced to an integrative, cross-theoretical model including listening and attending, exploring and interviewing, formulating and intervening. Instruction on basic helping skills and how to implement them will be provided. The format of the course is both didactic and experiential. Ethics and professionalism are weaved throughout the course. Self-care and self-awareness are emphasized as part of the student’s development as professional helper.
