HIST 256 - Latinx Racial and Ethnic Identities

Credit(s): 3
3 hours lecture, 3 hours contact
Prerequisite(s): ENGL 112 ENGL 192
This course offers an historical accounting of how Latinxs (Latinos/as) both experienced and adapted to processes of racialization in the United States. By examining interdisciplinary scholarship and sources, we will explore the fluidity, complexity, and (often) confusing manners in which racial and ethnic identities have been constructed and changed over time. We must also address Latinx people’s own array of racial and ethnic identities, and how these complemented or clashed existing definitions and perceptions of race withing the US context.
