MUSI 174 - African American Music History Credit(s): 3-6 3-6 hours lecture, 3-6 hours contact Cross-Listed With: HIST 174 This seminar surveys the principle genres of African-American and African- American derived, folk, popular, jazz, gospel and classical music. The seminar has a dual emphasis: musical aesthetics, forms and instruments, and the cultural and historical context of African- American music. The seminar provides the students with an introductory basis for understanding the history of contemporary African-American music and appreciating its harmony and musical forms.
A Life Arts Project is required.
Only open to students in the B.A. Liberal Arts and Sciences program.
