HLSC 200 - Issues in Personal Health Credit(s): 3 3 hours lecture, 3 hours contact Prerequisite(s): ENGL 111 , This course provides an introduction to understanding major factors that influence personal health including access to care, nutrition, physical fitness, mental health, stress management, disease prevention, violence and the role of the environment. Popular controversies surrounding these topics will be debated and students will learn to support their positions using scientific data. Evidence-based decision making to modify behavior and improve personal health will be utilized to create a personal health plan as well as health promotion materials. Course concepts are reinforced through selected readings, discussion and service learning.
