ENGL 212 - Science Fiction Credit(s): 3 3 hours lecture, 3 hours contact Prerequisite(s): ENGL 112 or ENGL 192 / HONR 192 . This course involves the study and discussion of a variety of science fiction, also known as speculative fiction. Throughout the semester students will explore what science fiction is, will learn about when and why it emerged as a form of literature, and will consider what value or power it might have in our world and lives today. Readings will include works from across the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, beginning with those of the “pulp” era of the early-twentieth century; moving up through the “Golden Age” of the mid-twentieth century; through the “new wave” of the 1960s and ‘70s; and into the science fiction of today. Works studied will typically be short fiction but other media such as film, video, and internet/television shows could be included.
