PSYN 199 - Psychology of Women

Prerequisite(s): PSYN 106 Introduction to Psychology
This seminar focuses on the psychological development of women throughout the life cycle. Emphasis will be placed on their physiological, emotional, intellectual, and social development within the context of contemporary personality theory. Students will examine the influence and interaction of biology, socialization, and female/male power relationships resulting in internalized female behaviors. Myths of female passivity, dependence, masochism, and hysteria will be critically examined through a review of current research. In addition, the impact of feminism, and ethnic and cultural diversity, will be discussed in terms of redefining female/male relationships, conceptions of self, role expectations, and positive mental health models. A Life Arts Project is required. Only open to students in the B.A. Liberal Arts and Sciences program.
