ENGL 410 - Short Story Credit(s): 3 3 hours lecture, 3 hours contact Prerequisite(s): ENGL 287 Modes of Analysis Short stories are concise literary expressions of the human condition and often powerful explorations of humanity’s place in the world. In this course, students will become familiar with the various methods authors use to tell their stories, and will follow the development of recognizable themes common to the human experience. Readings are drawn from writers as diverse as Anton Chekhov, Amy Tan, Ralph Ellison, Edwidge Danticat and others. Course Objectives: At the end of this course, students will be competent in the following areas: • Identify knowledge of literary elements such as characterization, plot and story, theme, setting, symbolism and theme • Employ the basic skills of interpreting and analyzing literature • The use of Employ basic skills in personal writing styles • Demonstrate competence in thesis development and support • The extraction Extract of central ideas from written texts
