COMM 460 - Race,Gender,Sexuality in Music Credit(s): 6 6 hours lecture, 6 hours contact Prerequisite(s): An intermediate level communications course. Much has been written concerning imagery in certain media outlets and lyrics of popular music and videos regarding the degradation of women, especially women of color, and non-heterosexual behaviors. Much of the discussions about these issues are taking place in the mass media including newspapers, internet blogs and magazines.This advanced seminar seeks to provide a space for the examination of racial, gender and sexual identity constructions within the mass media in the United States. Students will also review arguments, statutes and laws regarding censorship and freedom of expression.
A Life Arts Project is required.
Only open to students in the B.A. Liberal Arts and Sciences program.
