ENGL 271 - Modern British Novel 1900 to Present Credit(s): 3 3 hours lecture, 3 hours contact Prerequisite(s): ENGL 112 or ENGL 192 / HONR 192 . A study of Anglo-Irish novels written between the end of the nineteenth century and the present, and the ways in which works from this period break with the past through changing concepts of time and reality. Symbolism and stream-of-consciousness, the role of the absurd, and the women’s movement are some of the developments in form and content analyzed in the works of this era. Students will also explore different critical strategies for approaching texts.
