ENGL 267 - Caribbean Literature Credit(s): 3 3 hours lecture, 3 hours contact Prerequisite(s): ENGL 112 or ENGL 192 / HONR 192 . This course surveys authors from the English, French, Dutch, and Spanish-speaking islands of the Caribbean. Some issues that will be explored are the writer’s choice of language (the language of the colonizer versus nation language); the rising voice of Caribbean women carving out distinctive space for themselves; the significance and spiritual force of carnival; Negritude; and the writer in exile. Authors to be studied include Caryl Phillips and Gabriel G. Marquez.
