MTHE 551 - Colloquia for Teaching and Learning Secondary School Mathematics II Credit(s): 3 3 semester hours This course will focus on classroom strategies designed to create a climate conducive to effective instruction in secondary school mathematics. This course is linked to the internship experience where teacher candidates will have the opportunity to discuss, implement, and reflect on the latest research-based teaching practices and how theoretical models compare to practical experiences. In addition, teacher candidates will be acquainted with the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics, which will provide the framework for each seminar for both mathematics content and process. Mercy College mathematics education faculty, clinicians and guest speakers will be invited to selected sessions to facilitate discussions and share their expertise and experience, which will center on emerging problems common to practicing mathematics teachers as well as other issues that affect classroom life. Teacher candidates are expected to implement the suggestions discussed in their colloquium sessions in their respective classrooms.
