EDUC 707 - Mentoring Seminar in TESOL Credit(s): 3 3 semester hours Prerequisite(s): Passing scores on the ESOL CST The professional semester is comprised of a mentored teaching experience and the corresponding seminar. It is the capstone course of the TESOL graduate education program. Mentored experience is defined as a full-day, full-time, school-based experience that is mentored by both certified, experienced teachers and school administrators, as well as a college field supervisor. The experience is designed to reflect the reality of the TESOL classroom. The seminar focuses on issues relative to the INTASC Standards for Licensing Beginning Teachers, as well as those of TESOL. Pertinent issues and topics related to the expectations expressed in the Standards form the basis for presentations, group discussions and/or video analysis. Seminar topics incorporate effective instructional planning strategies, school organization, materials’ review and adaptation and the management of ESL program classes. Provisions are made for cooperative examination and reflection of field experiences and assessment of instructional outcomes. Twenty days of appropriate in school experiences are required.
