MUSI 108 - Exploring the World of Music

In this course, students will survey musics from around the globe to develop a basic understanding of the essential elements of music, including rhythm, melody, texture, timbre, and harmony. Using readings and clips of musical performances from American jazz, gospel, and rock to traditional music from West Africa, the Caribbean, Asia and Eastern Europe, students will discover how these essential components serve both musical expression and cultural expression. This course will incorporate themes such as music’s impact on the human brain, music and the environment, and music as cultural memory.
